It seems CBD oil has captivated the public. But is it safe?
First and foremost, I want to spell out the differences to you between marijuana and CBD oil.
Marijuana is the leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant.
CBD is short for a compound called cannabidiol. It can be extracted from the same plant as marijuana, or from hemp which is another type of cannabis plant. Hemp has many uses, and was grown since colonial times for the making of ropes and other types of cordage. It was banned in the US but has since been legalized again.
Hemp has very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the main psychoactive compound in marijuana. High levels of THC is what causes the “high” from marijuana and CBD oil does not create the same effect. It also does not seem to have the same addictive qualities that the CDC believes to be the case about marijuana.
Clinical trials have been underway for sometime concerning CBD oil, and so far it seems to be safe. There is one prescribed medication currently on the market to treat epilepsy.
I urge you to do your own research however, and please consult with your doctor before beginning any home treatment. CBD use may carry some risks. These risks are rare, and seem to be much less affecting than the side effects of prescription drugs, but please be aware that, CBD can cause diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness or fatigue. It is important, as always, to listen to your body and listen to the signals it is sending you.
Some solutions to our common health problems
I first learned of the power of CBD as my father in law was suffering from pancreatic cancer. I did a great deal of research, and I encourage you to do your own homework. CBD has been a therapy for thousands of years, so I truly believe this product to be safe and effective. Please note that It is not the same product as marijuana, and it is very important to educate yourself about anything you choose to consume, whether it is a food or a prescription drug or a natural therapy.
Remember that belief is an important part of efficacy. We all know of the importance of the placebo effect. Understanding the value of any therapy to you is really important. So, personally, I want to share with you some benefits that I have seen, as well as what my clients have experienced.
1. Pain Relief
Our bodies contain a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is part of a system in the body that regulates a number of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.
The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system.
Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptors thereby reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters to reduce the feelings of pain.
The studies that have been most effective are currently associated with reduction of pain for those suffering from multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Ongoing research may conclusively point to other conditions as more and more studies are underway.
2. Sleep disorders and Insomnia Relief
This is something I must personally report on. I want to do many more articles on sleep, since this is what I am still working towards improving. Sleep has always been elusive for me, and CBD oil has been incredibly helpful to me personally. So let’s dig in to its value.
CBD has the ability to reduce anxiety, which can be helpful in reducing sleep difficulties and improving sleep quality. CBD may increase overall sleep amounts, and improve insomnia, according to research. CBD has been shown to reduce insomnia in people who suffer from chronic pain.
It is really important to take care in your dosage. In smaller doses, CBD stimulates alertness and reduces daytime sleepiness, which is important for daytime performance and for the strength and consistency of the sleep-wake cycle. Again, listening to your body is key.
3. Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are very serious concerns for us today. It is what I hear most in my practice with my clients. And , according to the World Health Organization, depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide, while anxiety disorders are ranked sixth. Anxiety can be very debilitating and treatment is generally limited.
Quite often, drugs are prescribed by doctors, which can have a number of side effects. The biggest reported side effects are marked drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and headache. And the scariest part of this is some of these medications may lead to substance abuse.
CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for both depression and anxiety, which has led to much interest in this new alternative for relief from the difficult nature of both disorders.
4. Reduction of cancer related symptoms
There are some really promising studies out there for some remarkable healing properties in cancer patients. According to medicalcannabisoutreach.com, recent studies have shown that using CBD along with other cannabinoids such as THC slows the growth, or even kills certain kinds of cancer cells in a lab setting. Studies of animals with cancerous cells also suggest that certain properties of CBD oil could slow the growth of cancer cells and keep it from spreading quickly.
Cannabinoids such as CBD and THC are useful in treating the side effects of cancer, and can ease the pain of chemotherapy. There is positive evidence that medical cannabis could include anti-inflammatory activity, blocking cell growth, preventing the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors, and aiding in antiviral activity to support the immune system.
There have also been some early clinical trials of cannabinoids in treating cancer in humans — and future studies about the potential of medical marijuana as a cancer treatment have been planned. While the studies so far have shown that medical cannabis can be safe in treating cancer symptoms, they do not show that they help control or cure the disease.
While forms of medical cannabis like CBD oil and topicals haven’t typically been used to treat cancer itself, what is so promising about cannabinoids is that they have the ability to reduce inflammation and alter how cells in the body reproduce. Medical cannabis can reduce the ability of certain types of tumor cells to multiply and grow. Something else that’s really interesting about using cannabinoids for cancer patients is that they will target the cancer cells and remain harmless to the healthy cells.
It seems, too, that appetite can be restored after chemotherapy treatment, so this helps cancer patients eat better foods and maintain their nutrition and their weight. More on this in the next blog post.
Research is ongoing and CBD oil has a promising future.
CBD oil has been studied for its potential role in treating many common health issues, including anxiety, depression, and cancer prevention and moderation. For those with cancer, it may even provide a natural alternative for pain and symptom relief.
Research on the potential health benefits of CBD oil is ongoing, so new therapeutic uses for this natural remedy are likely to increase. The results from recent studies suggest that CBD may provide a safe, powerful natural treatment for many so many that are struggling with chronic disease, and without the side effects of the marijuana plant. It seems to be a natural and safe alternative. If you would like more information, please comment below. You may purchase the CBD oil that I use personally and recommend to my clients here.
